How to Draw - Character Creation

  • Makers Mews The Mews, Harford Road Ivybridge, England, PL21 0AS United Kingdom (map)

What's a tale without a lovable character to root for?

Are you itching to create your unforgettable hero or villain but not sure where to start?

Professional Illustrator, Morgana Weeks of Wabi-Sabi Creations will help you master the art of character design, so you can unleash your ideas onto the page like a pro!

Week 1 Welcomes + an introduction to the world of character design

Tuesday 14th May, 18:30-20:30

In this first session we will introduce ourselves + do a quick warm up drawing exercise together. We will then be talking about the basics of character design, and what we look for in characters to make them unique + interesting- is it crazy hair, strangely coloured eyes or perhaps magical markings? We will explore this + how we can use simple techniques to start creating the foundation of our character!

Week 2 Hair, skin + body shapes

Tuesday 21st May, 18:30-20:30

In this session we will be taking a look at techniques to portray our characters’ key features, including textures, tones + dynamic poses to make our characters feel alive on the page.

We will also cover common mistakes + how to avoid them.

‘Lil interlude for half term

Week 3 Clothes, accessories + colours

Tuesday 4th June, 18:30-20:30

Clothing can tell us so much about a character in an instant.

In this session, we will look into what sorts of techniques we can use to illustrate clothing, fabrics + accessories (watches/jewellery etc), and how colours play a key part in how our character is perceived by others.

Week 4 Bringing it all together- Creating a full character illustration

Tuesday 11th June, 18:30-20:30

In this last session, we will showcase our fully fleshed out character; warts, handbags + all! Bringing together all of the skills we have learnt over the past few weeks, reflecting on our progress, and celebrating our achievements with a good old ‘show + tell’!

Materials list: Basic materials will be provided, but we recommend each student getting their own so they can practice in between sessions, and have their own materials ready to go after the course.

A sketchbook/sketchpad, a set of basic drawing pencils, colouring pencils, fineliner pens, or Biro style ballpoint pens work well too! The Works have a wide range for the artist just starting out and they are very budget friendly too!
