We’ll provide support and encouragement to help you overcome your barriers to cycling - ask us questions like ‘why do lamp posts have a magnetic pull, causing me to cycle into them!?’ or ‘how do you do a really cool skid?’ or better still ‘how on EARTH do people cycle UP hills?!’
Learning to ride can be mentally and physically tiring, so each session will be for a maximum of 1 hour. These hourly slots will be split into manageable chunks - with time to catch your breath and note your achievements!
These sessions are taking place on a flat ‘playground’ at Ivybridge Community College. We’re limiting each session to 6 people.
Your instructors are jon + Helen from Sustrans.
They are both very experienced and will guide you through the session at a pace that is comfortable to you.
Please arrive 15 minutes before the session start time, so we can:
Say ‘Howdy’ and get the paperwork needed to be able to fund these kinds of projects out of the way - the Cycling UK survey collects names and emails.
Match riders without bikes to a suitably sized one to borrow.
We’ll all then go through an ‘M Check’ (a bike saftey check) and discuss cycle clothing and general safety when handling and riding a bike.
Next up we’ll ask about your current riding abilities, to be able to tailor what we teach to match your needs. There will be a mix of instructing the whole group together, as well as providing individual attention to address bespoke needs.
There will be a lot of celebrating with whooping and hollering, and time to ask as many ‘silly’ questions as you like- we want you to leave feeling more confident and motivated than when you started, so share those niggling worries and frustrations so we can help you overcome them.
‘Where can you buy a not-ugly helmet?’
‘I really struggle going round corners without putting my feet down’
‘How do I signal with one hand, but not go sideways?’
We’re also available to signpost you to:
Upcoming ‘Fix’ events if your bike would benefit from a safety check.
Upcoming ‘Learn to Fix’ events to learn about minor bike repairs.
Joining a local Cycling UK, Community Cycle Club. A great way to sustain cycling and meet like-minded others.
Bike rental schemes or recycled bike sales.
Once you’ve mastered riding a bike, we can show you where to find a led ride event. It's a great way to learn local route knowledge.
