Big Bike Revival - Learn to Fix

  • Makers Mews The Mews, Harford Road Ivybridge, England, PL21 0AS United Kingdom (map)

Learn basic maintenance skills

how to fix minor repairs and make small adjustments

‘Learn to Fix’ sessions involve the teaching of basic roadside maintenance issues including preventative maintenance, punctures, broken chains, basic gear adjustments and the selection and use of multi-tools. Some sessions are designed to be introductory and some at an intermediate level assuming some previous experience but we will strive to adapt to the needs of the group.

Taking place in Makers Mews classroom - you can cycle right to the door!

We’ll start with a ‘Howdy’ and get the paperwork needed to be able to fund these kinds of projects out of the way - the Cycling UK survey collects names and emails.

We’ll then allocate you a space and tools, and ask you about your bike fixing experience thus far, to know how gently to start and how far we can push you, so you get the most out of the session.

this session is

Some parts such as wheels, tyres, inner tubes and chains will be available for practice, but it would be pragmatic to become familiar with working on your own bike and you are encouraged to bring this with you. We encourage participants to continue to develop their repair skills at home.

‘Doing the doing’ really strengthens that the learning will be remembered. We’ll give personalised feedback on technique and provide tips and tricks so you can improve.

We’re also available to signpost you to:

  • Learn to Ride’ events if your cycle skills need improving.

  • Joining a local Cycling UK, Community Cycle Club. A great way to meet like-minded others.

  • Recommendations for local, independent bike shops with community interests, for more advanced repairs if needed.

BEGINNER: Mainly focused on punctures, broken chains and simple gear adjustment.

INTERMEDIATE: Advanced puncture fixing (including tubeless), gear setup from scratch, brake pad replacement, and rim and disc systems.
